Adoptable Horses
Our rescue has many horses currently available for adoption and looking for a forever home. We try our best to post all of our available horses to the website; however, we still have numerous horses at the farm which have not been listed yet. Continue checking this page periodically to see new horses added to our adoption page, or contact us at raradoption@gmail.com to schedule a visit and see who all is available for leasing and adoption!

Our rescue program is a little different than most because we not only rescue and rehabilitate we also work extra hard to incorporate our horses into our Ride-A-Rescue horseback riding program; which was started to help support these rescue horses as part of their rehabilitation. Ride-A-Rescue trail rides use only healthy, rested rescue horses eager and ready to work. This program is designed to be a fun community activity that provides our rescues with a job and sense of purpose!

Class 2
Tennessee Walking Horse N/A Mare 1998 Chestnut 15 6 $900 (negotiable to the right home) Meet speedy Anna! If you’re looking for a horse to take out on the trail and cover some ground, Anna’s your girl. Anna is good for an advanced rider who can handle her forward tendencies. She has a wonderfully smooth gait plus this mare is versatile--she can lead, follow, and pony other horses. She'll cross bridges, ride on the road, and she's even gone the beach and waded into the water like she owned the place! She's a very hearty mare that has no soundness or health issues, has great feet and can go with or without shoes on all different terrain. She's even good for the farrier, vet, and dentist! Don't let her age fool you she's got more life and stamina than many of our younger horses. Anna enjoys the company of other horses on the trail, but she will also go out on her own. The more you work with her, the better she gets! Miss Anna will take you anywhere you want to go! |
Belle
|
Class:
Breed(s): Registry: Gender: Age: Color: Height: Temperament: Adoption Fee: Description: |
Class 3
Quarter Horse N/A Mare 2004 Gray 14.2 Hands 4 $700 Belle is a well-built QH who would make a great companion horse or light arena riding or light trail riding horse. She came to us as a result of a rescue seizure from her previous home. She has been registered with the AQHA, but as a result of her being seized from her former owner, Belle’s registration papers were never turned over. She is a wonderful mover that has great ground and field manners. She has been one of our main horses used for children's birthday party's, she love the attention and kids. She would be ideal for a beginner rider who is solely riding in the ring, or an intermediate rider who wants to do some light trail riding. Belle will need regular hoof care to keep her feet shod and balanced, as she does wing inward with her front feet which places extra stress on her lower limbs and an old ligament injury. It is advised that she stay shod and will need a farrier that is comfortable working with her conformation. |

Quarter Horse N/A Mare 2008 Sorrel 14.2H 6 $1000 Chexy is a well-built QH who is still green but very willing to learn. She came to us (with Belle) as a result of a rescue seizure from her previous home. She has been registered with the AQHA, but as a result of her being seized from her former owner, Chexy’s registration papers were never turned over to Winterfrost. She is a wonderful mover who could be trained for anything from working pleasure to jumping. With great ground and field manners, she is easy to fall in love with and will challenge her riders. She would be ideal for an advanced rider who is looking for an all-around horse. COST WILL INCREASE WITH HER TRAINING |

Class 1
Ponies of America (POA) Yes Gelding 1995 Leopard Appaloosa 12.3 Hands 4 $800 Chip is an Leopard Appaloosa pony who is registered with the Ponies of America (POA) organization. He has been trained as a hunter/jumper and was shown prior to coming to us. We have found that he behaves better in the arena than he does on the trail, but his trail riding skills are improving daily as he adjusts to life at Winterfrost! Chip is an alpha in the field, but he has good ground manners and respects your space. He would be ideal for an intermediate rider who is looking for an experienced hunter/jumper horse for showing or simple pleasure. |
Duchess- Adoption Pending

Class 3
Thoroughbred Cross N/A Mare ~2014 Model Bay ~15.2H 8 (needs a confidant handler) $550 (Subject to evaluation with training) Duchess is an unregistered Thoroughbred, and likely Saddlebred, cross mare whose precise age is unknown but we estimate her to be a 2014 model. We do not know much about Duchess's past before being at RAR, other than she has had some ground work done, wore a saddle and had a rider sit on her at the walk. Duchess is currently in training at RAR and so far during her time with us she seems to be very willing to learn but she can be very nervous and “leery” of a person until she gets to know them better. She can be “dancy/nervous” for the farrier and the vet at first, then once she gets comfortable with her handler, she calms down considerably and is very willing to do what is asked of her. Duchess is a sweet natured mare that wants to please, but she needs to know that her handler will keep her safe and is not there to be aggressive. She will need a trainer and handler that can gain her trust and help her work through her nervous behavior. Duchess does load and trailers well, we currently only consider her halter broke and will need extensive training before she is able to work under saddle. If you are looking for a new horse to build a bond with and go almost any direction you can think of, then Duchess is your girl! PRICE WILL INCREASE WITH TRAINING |

Premier Horse
Quarter Horse N/A Mare 8 Chestnut 15.2H 1 $3500 Faith is a chestnut Quarter horse mare that has a laid back, sweet personality that anyone can ride! She prefers to do trail rides and has many miles of trail experience, but has also been used as a lesson horse at the rescue. She is capable of a smooth walk/trot/canter, is the perfect horse for a beginner, but also has the ability to take any level rider in any direction they may want to try! Even though Faith prefers to take things easy and slow, she has potential for almost any discipline. |
Impress M Freckles- aka freckles

Breed(s): Registry: Gender: Age: Color: Height: Temperament: Adoption Fee: Description: |
Class 3
Paint Horse American Paint Horse Association Mare 1994 Sorrel Tobiano 14.3H 2 $600 Freckles is a super sweet mare. She is amazing for the beginner rider; she could be a real confidence builder for a first time/beginner riders because of her background. We have used her for riding lessons, trail rides and many different parades. She has even taught many Boy Scouts how to ride over the past few summers. She is very willing to do what she is ask to do for her rider. Here are just a few things that she does without hesitation: lead or follow out on the trail, walk and trot for beginners, advanced rider can get her to canter, and she can be ridden in English or Western. Needless to say this mare is overall very easy going and super friendly. She does have a previous injury to her right front fetlock and a suspensory ligament along with the starts of arthritis and some evidance of the start of navicular. We keep her on a 4-6 week shoeing schedule with shoes that allow for ease of breakover but she can remain barefooted & trimmed with ease of break over if not being rode. Because she is older we do limit her ride time to avoid overexertion. We do suggest that she only be used for lighter riders to go out on the trail or ride around the ring. She would also make a great pasture mate for another horse. Freckles is a perfect baby sitter horse and would make a WONDERFUL addition to your family!!!!! |
John Deere- aka jd

Class:
Breed(s): Registry: Gender: Age: Color: Height: Temperament: Adoption Fee: Description: |
Class 2
Hackney N/A Gelding 2007 Bay 13.3 Hands 6 $1000 JD is a Hackney who is not naturally gaited. He was gelded as a 3 yr old and still tends to be an alpha in the field, but he is respectful to people. He is trained at a walk/trot/canter, but is a fast mover who would need someone confident enough to keep him under rein. JD is a reliable trail horse who knows when it’s time to work. This pony does it all- he'll cross creeks, bridges, tarps, pony other horses, go out on his own or with a group. He is also intelligent, and with the proper training could be an all-around working or show horse. JD would be suitable for an intermediate or advanced rider who is looking for a good all-around prospect. |
Katniss

Breed(s): Registry: Gender: Age: Color: Height: Temperament: Adoption Fee: Description: |
Class 3
Arabian Cross N/A Mare ~2005 model Bay ~15.1H 8 $currently under evaluation An unregistered Arabian cross mare whose precise age is unknown but we estimate her to be a 2005 model. Katniss is currently in training at RAR and needs an advanced handler. During her time with us at RAR she has done well with her training; energetic but attentive in her ground work and forward while under saddle. Katniss has a sweet demeanor that wants to learn mixed with a little bit of an independent streak. It is apparent that at some point Katniss knew a lot but it has been a while since she has had to use that knowledge; she has an amazing floating trot and is very responsive to cues. Katniss does load and trailers well. We currently consider her very green broke, because she still requires an advanced handler. If you are looking for a hidden gem that needs a little buffing, then Katniss is your girl! PRICE WILL INCREASE WITH TRAINING |

Premier Mule
Appaloosa Mule N/A Molly 2002 Red Roan 15.2H 4 $1650 Lena is a beautiful Appaloosa Mule. She is not gaited, but rides well at a walk/trot/canter. She is great on the trails and is considerate to the other horses. Lena had her left eye removed as a result of ulceration from an old injury, but she doesn’t let that stop her from having fun in the field or on the trail! From being up in the mountains, going to Christmas Parades or going out into the great Atlantic Ocean, she will go any where you ask her to go. She would be suitable for an advanced beginner to an advanced rider that is looking to enjoy a great trail mule. |

Breed(s): Registry: Gender: Age: Color: Height: Temperament: Adoption Fee: Description: |
Class 1
Tennessee Walking Horse N/A Gelding 2000 Liver Chestnut 15.3H 4 $1100 Leo is a solid trail horse for an intermediate or advanced rider. He will lead, follow, and pony on trails. He will go out by himself or with a group. Leo has a very smooth gait and will rack when asked. He will work in the arena for ground work as well as to be ridden. He currently is being used as a lead trail horse at the rescue. He has been used as an advance lesson horse as well. Leo has participated in off-site events, such as Sinkland farms, Christmas parades, and other festivals. Leo has even attended the American Heart Association beach ride; where he was a perfect gentlemen who didn’t hesitate to get in the water! He was even able to lead other horses, who were hesitant, into the water and he was never fazed by the other horses or the high activity and noise level of the beach ride. He loads, unloads, and hauls very well. He stands for the farrier and the vet. |
Lilac- AKA Lila

Class 3
Arabian N/A Mare ~2013 Black Bay ~14.2H 4- Not broke to ride $650 (subject to evaluation with more training) Lilac, AKA Lila, is a black bay Arabian mare that is estimated to be a 2013 model. Lila and her mother were found in the most direst of circumstances. Their previous owner had become very ill, needing to be hospitalized and having no family to call to help, Lila and her mom were left abandoned in a pasture with little to no grass and only a small creek for water. Because of the lack of proper nutrition during some of her main growing years, Lila was a bit stunted. She needed better nutrition and more time to develop, so she has spent her time with us just growing and learning to be a horse. Lila is great on the halter, has had groundwork and long/driving line work done, she loads on a trailer like a champ and stands perfectly for the vet and farrier. But she is still very green and has not had a saddle on her yet. She is a great little mare that has potential to go almost any direction you want her to go and with her floating movement, sweet, curious, follow you around, puppy dog type attitude, she’s a horse you’re sure to love! Midnight

Class 2
Standardbred N/A Gelding 2008 model Black Bay 16H 7 $1200 (subjuest to change with training) Meet Midnight! This tall dark and handsome man came to us in January 2018 due to family health issues. Although he can be very cautious and a bit nervous with new people, Midnight has a very sweet, loving, willing and in your pocket attitude once he gets comfortable with you. Midnight showed great potential and it only took a few months of rehabilitation before Midnight started to come out of his shell and trust again. He has been trail ridden at different locations, such as Dismal Falls, Fairy stone State park, and even been to the American Heart Association beach ride twice. When Midnight has confidence in his rider he will lead and follow out on the trail along with walk, trot, canter in the arena. Midnight is ideal for an advanced rider on the trail, in the ring and while working on the ground. He is a sensitive mount who feeds off his rider; so, the quieter the rider, the quieter he will be. Midnight is willing, and if his rider presents something with confidence, he will work hard to do whatever is asked. The more he works, the more confident he becomes. With a confident advanced rider, this boy really shines and has the potential to be your trusty mount out on any trail you want to try. Overall, Midnight is easy-going, friendly, a bit shy, and an eager companion. He is low on the pecking order in the field. He requires some coaching when being caught and has done well with trailering, the farrier, vets and vaccinations. PRICE WILL INCREASE WITH TRAINING |

Class 2
Tennessee Walker N/A Mare 2003 Black and White 15.1H 4 $1350 (subject to change with training) This striking, sweet girl came to us in January 2018 as a rescue from a kill pen. Sickly, underweight, and understandably nervous, she still showed great potential, and it only took a few months of rehabilitation before Mona started to come out of her shell and trust again. With trust in her trainer, she was started under saddle, and it became clear that she had been ridden and worked before. Given all of her progress, Mona’s trainer took her to the American Heart Association beach ride. She excelled, even in the new, potentially scary environment, confidently entering the water and helping lead the other horses into the ocean. She has even been used as one of our advanced lessons horses at Ride-A-Rescue. This mare really shines and has the potential to be your trusty mount out on any trail you want to try. Mona is ideal for an intermediate rider on the trail or in the ring. She is a sensitive mount who feeds off her rider; so, the quieter the rider, the quieter she will be. Mona is willing, and if her rider presents something with confidence, she will work hard to do whatever is asked. The more she works, the more confident she becomes. For an advanced rider, she will walk, trot, canter in the arena and though she is not naturally gaited, she may rack with the correct cues. Overall, Mona is easy-going, friendly, a bit shy, and an eager companion. She is low on the pecking order in the field. PRICE WILL INCREASE WITH TRAINING |

Class:
Breed(s): Registry: Gender: Age: Color: Height: Temperament: Adoption Fee: Description: |
Class 3
Quarter Horse N/A Gelding 2003 Dun 15.0H 3 $1200 Mordecai is a Quarter Horse with a beautiful coloration and sweet temperament, he loves attention and will give his all to please his rider. He is they type of horse that makes you want to be at the barn even on the days that are so cold you tend to question yourself why you own a horse :) Coming in at about 15.1 hands, he is a great size for many riders, and has a smooth gait. Mordecai does have two large scars on either side of his withers where he was bitten by a stallion as a foal. These two areas can be sensitive and cause irritation if a poorly fitted saddle is being used. If you prefer the western discipline then we recommend using a well fitted saddle with a quality saddle pad. Mordecai also sustained some damage to his flexor tendon on his front legs at some point in his life. He does wear wear shoes to give him easy break-over at the toe to help prevent any strain on his flexor tendons. He is sound and very comfortable with his shoes and would be well suited for most any disciplines. We do not suggest him for jumping but he is great out on the trails and in the arena. He will go out on his own or with a group and very little phases him. We have found that he can tend toward being buddy sour if left to field for a long period of time without being ridden but after a few rounds lunging he does great. He would be suitable for any level of rider if ridden regularly and would work great for a riding or lesson program! |

Class 2
Quarter Horse N/A Gelding 2012 Chestnut 14.1H 3 $ Poncho is a chestnut Quarter Horse gelding that has more personality than we can even begin to try and explain! He is very sweet natured, loves attention, and will follow you around like a loyal puppy dog. He is an extraordinarily level headed boy that takes everything in stride, and is always willing to learn. We would consider him green broke because he still is not great at a canter but does willingly walk/trot. He has been to Myrtle Beach for the AHA beach ride, and on over night camping trips. He has potential to go in any direction you may want, and is ready to find his new home and career. He has great ground manners (occasionally struggles with personal space), and gets along with almost any horse he pastures with. COST WILL INCREASE WITH HIS TRAINING |
Sally

Class:
Breed(s): Registry: Gender: Age: Color: Height: Temperament: Adoption Fee: Description: |
Class 3
Standardbred N/A Mare ~2006 Model Bay 15.3H 5 $700 Miss Sally is an amazing mare that doesn’t wear her heart on her sleeve but once you get to know her you see her heart is almost too big for her body! Much of her past is unknown to us but it is obvious that she has been worked hard and put up wet. Somewhere along the way she allowed someone to be her leader and they took advantage of her undying commitment to them! We got Sally from a sale pen and after getting her home it was very obvious that she has spent a good bit of time bouncing between owners and sale pens. At first interaction with Sally you would think she is a bit cold and aloof, it takes a bit for her to warm up to you, but deep down inside she wants to be loved. Although she is skeptical at first, you can see the relief in her eyes once she realizes that she isn’t about to suffer under the heavy hand of a human. Upon arrival to RAR Sally had some hind end issues and once evaluated we found she had sustained a hairline fracture to her right cannon bone that was in the process of healing. Since her recovery Sally has been able to do light riding and ring work. She is very forward on the ground and we are still working to improve her ground manners. Under saddle, she can be either very lazy or a bit forward; she will test her rider to see if they are going to be the leader or not, but once she knows you are the leader she will go anywhere you point her. There is not a mean bone in the mares body, no rear, buck or bite just a bit reluctant to move out at first. Due to her previous hind leg injury and needing to wear corrective shoes up front, if being rode, we suggest Sally as a pasture pal or for light trail riding only. If not being ridden she can be barefoot and overall she is an easy keeper, trailers like a pro, is the middle horse on the totem pole, pastures well with mares or geldings and is great for the farrier and the vet. If you’re looking for a quiet easy going pasture pal or for a horse that will give you her heart and soul, then Sally may be the right horse for you. |

Paso Fino Cross N/A Mare 2002 Chocolate Palomino 14.0H 4 $1150 Sassy is a Passo Fino mare that is not naturally gaited but if the rider know the correct cues she does have the ability to gait. She can be a little shy in the field, but once she gets to know you she love to get attention. She can be ridden hunter/jumper or western pleasure, and has been used at Camp Carrysbrook and Boy Scout Camp as a lesson horse for kids. She is also used as a beginner lesson horse and trail horse at our farm. Sassy was a bit over weight and had some over growth issues with her feet when she came to us, but luckily she did not founder. With regular farrier visits and a monitored diet, she is now in great physical shape and does not have any feeding restrictions. Her is nervousness with new people can make her a little challenging to catch at times, so we suggest her for advanced beginners that have some horse experience. |
