Adoptable Horses

Our rescue has many horses currently available for adoption and looking for a forever home. We try our best to post all of our available horses to the website; however, we still have numerous horses at the farm which have not been listed yet.  The best way to find out more about the horses we have avaliable for adoption please contact us at raradoption@gmail.com to find out more about who all is available for leasing and adoption or to schedule a visit!

Please read the following about our currently available horses :

Our rescue program is a little different than most because we not only rescue and rehabilitate we also work extra hard to incorporate our horses into our Ride-A-Rescue horseback riding program; which was started to help support these rescue horses as part of their rehabilitation. Ride-A-Rescue trail rides use only healthy, rested rescue horses eager and ready to work. This program is designed to be a fun community activity that provides our rescues with a job and sense of purpose!
To help possible adopters know a little more about the listed available horses we have created a CLASS rating system. Each horse listed will have a class posted in thier information. Please see the below listed CLASSES to better understand what horse may fit your needs.
For more information on how we come up with our adoption fees or the next step to take if you are interested in adopting please see our "How to adopt" page

Meet speedy Anna! If you’re looking for a horse to take out on the trail and cover some ground, Anna’s your girl.  Anna is good for an advanced rider who can handle her forward tendencies. She has a wonderfully smooth gait plus this mare is versatile--she can lead, follow, and pony other horses. She'll cross bridges, ride on the road, and she's even gone the beach and waded into the water like she owned the place! She's a very hearty mare that has no soundness or health issues, has great feet and can go with or without shoes on all different terrain. She's even good for the farrier, vet, and dentist! Don't let her age fool you she's got more life and stamina than many of our younger horses.
Anna enjoys the company of other horses on the trail, but she will also go out on her own. The more you work with her, the better she gets! Miss Anna will take you anywhere you want to go!

Belle is a well-built QH who would make a great companion horse or light arena riding or light trail riding horse. She came to us as a result of a rescue seizure from her previous home. She has been registered with the AQHA, but as a result of her being seized from her former owner, Belle’s registration papers were never turned over. She is a wonderful mover that has great ground and field manners. She has been one of our main horses used for children's birthday party's, she love the attention and kids. She would be ideal for a beginner rider who is solely riding in the ring, or an intermediate rider who wants to do some light trail riding. Belle will need regular hoof care to keep her feet shod and balanced, as she does wing inward with her front feet which places extra stress on her lower limbs and an old ligament injury.  It is advised that she stay shod and will need a farrier that is comfortable working with her conformation.

Chip is an Leopard Appaloosa pony who is registered with the Ponies of America (POA) organization. He has been trained as a hunter/jumper and was shown prior to coming to us. We have found that he behaves better in the arena than he does on the trail, but his trail riding skills are improving daily as he adjusts to life at Winterfrost! Chip is an alpha in the field, but he has good ground manners and respects your space. He would be ideal for an intermediate rider who is looking for an experienced hunter/jumper horse for showing or simple pleasure.

Freckles is a super sweet mare. She is amazing for the beginner rider; she could be a real confidence builder for a first time/beginner riders because of her background. We have used her for riding lessons, trail rides and many different parades. She has even taught many Boy Scouts how to ride over the past few summers. She is very willing to do what she is ask to do for her rider. Here are just a few things that she does without hesitation: lead or follow out on the trail, walk and trot for beginners, advanced rider can get her to canter, and she can be ridden in English or Western.

Needless to say this mare is overall very easy going and super friendly. She does have a previous injury to her right front fetlock and a suspensory ligament along with the starts of arthritis and some evidance of the start of navicular. We keep her on a 4-6 week shoeing schedule with shoes that allow for ease of breakover but she can remain barefooted  & trimmed with ease of break over if not being rode. Because she is older we do limit her ride time to avoid overexertion. We do suggest that she only be used for lighter riders to go out on the trail or ride around the ring.
She would also make a great pasture mate for another horse. Freckles is a perfect baby sitter horse and would make a WONDERFUL addition to your family!!!!!

JD is a Hackney who is not naturally gaited. He was gelded as a 3 yr old and still tends to be an alpha in the field, but he is respectful to people. He is trained at a walk/trot/canter, but is a fast mover who would need someone confident enough to keep him under rein. JD is a reliable trail horse who knows when it’s time to work. This pony does it all- he'll cross creeks, bridges, tarps, pony other horses, go out on his own or with a group.  He is also intelligent, and with the proper training could be an all-around working or show horse.  JD would be suitable for an intermediate or advanced rider who is looking for a good all-around prospect.

Lilac, AKA Lila, is a black bay Arabian mare that is estimated to be a 2013 model.  Lila and her mother were found in the most direst of circumstances. Their previous owner had become very ill, needing to be hospitalized and having no family to call to help, Lila and her mom were left abandoned in a pasture with little to no grass and only a small creek for water. Because of the lack of proper nutrition  during some of her main growing years, Lila was a bit stunted. She needed better nutrition and more time to develop,  so she has spent her time with us just growing and learning to be a horse. Lila is great on the halter, has had groundwork and long/driving line work done, she loads on a trailer like a champ and stands perfectly for the vet and farrier. But she is still very green and has not had a saddle on her yet. She is a great little mare that has potential to go almost any direction you want her to go and with her floating movement, sweet, curious, follow you around, puppy dog type attitude, she’s a horse you’re sure to love! PRICE WILL INCREASE WITH TRAINING

Meet Midnight! This tall dark and handsome man came to us in January 2018 due to family health issues. Although he can be very cautious and a bit nervous with new people, Midnight has a very sweet, loving, willing and in your pocket attitude once he gets comfortable with you. Midnight showed great potential and it only took a few months of rehabilitation before Midnight started to come out of his shell and trust again. He has been trail ridden at different locations, such as Dismal Falls, Fairy stone State park, and even been to the American Heart Association beach ride twice. When Midnight has confidence in his rider he will lead and follow out on the trail along with walk, trot, canter in the arena.  Midnight is ideal for an advanced rider on the trail, in the ring and while working on the ground. He is a sensitive mount who feeds off his rider; so, the quieter the rider, the quieter he will be. Midnight is willing, and if his rider presents something with confidence, he will work hard to do whatever is asked. The more he works, the more confident he becomes. With a confident advanced rider, this boy really shines and has the potential to be your trusty mount out on any trail you want to try.
Overall, Midnight is easy-going, friendly, a bit shy, and an eager companion. He is low on the pecking order in the field.  He requires some coaching when being caught and has done well with trailering, the farrier, vets and vaccinations.

Mordecai is a Quarter Horse with a beautiful coloration and sweet temperament, he loves attention and will give his all to please his rider.  He is they type of horse that makes you want to be at the barn even on the days that are so cold you tend to question yourself why you own a horse :)
Coming in at about 15.1 hands, he is a great size for many riders, and has a smooth gait. Mordecai does have two large scars on either side of his withers where he was bitten by a stallion as a foal. These two areas can be sensitive and cause irritation if a poorly fitted saddle is being used. If you prefer the western discipline then we recommend using a well fitted saddle with a quality saddle pad.
Mordecai also sustained some damage to his flexor tendon on his front legs at some point in his life. He does wear wear shoes to give him easy break-over at the toe to help prevent any strain on his flexor tendons. He is sound and very comfortable with his shoes and would be well suited for most any disciplines. We do not suggest him for jumping but he is great out on the trails and in the arena. He will go out on his own or with a group and very little phases him. We have found that he can tend toward being buddy sour if left to field for a long period of time without being ridden but after a few rounds lunging he does great. He would be suitable for any level of rider if ridden regularly and would work great for a riding or lesson program!

Poncho is a chestnut Quarter Horse gelding that has more personality than we can even begin to try and explain! He is  very sweet natured, loves attention, and will follow you around like a loyal puppy dog. He is an extraordinarily level headed boy that takes everything in stride, and is always willing to learn. We would consider him green broke because he still is not great at a canter but does willingly walk/trot. He has been to Myrtle Beach for the AHA beach ride, and on over night camping trips. He has potential to go in any direction you may want, and is ready to find his new home and career. He has great ground manners (occasionally struggles with personal space), and gets along with almost any horse he pastures with.

Miss Sally is an amazing mare that doesn’t wear her heart on her sleeve but once you get to know her you see her heart is almost too big for her body! She is a mare who requires you to prove to her you are the alpha in the relationship, but once you show her you can lead she will follow you to the moon and back!
Much of her past is unknown to us but it is obvious that she has been worked hard and put up wet. Somewhere along the way she allowed someone to be her leader and they took advantage of her undying commitment to them! We got Sally from a sale pen and after getting her home it was very obvious that she has spent a good bit of time bouncing between owners and sale pens. At first interaction with Sally you would think she is a bit cold and aloof, it takes a bit for her to warm up to you, but deep down inside she wants to be loved. Although she is skeptical at first, you can see the relief in her eyes once she realizes that she isn’t about to suffer under the heavy hand of a human.
Upon arrival to RAR Sally had some hind end issues and once evaluated we found she had sustained a hairline fracture to her right cannon bone that was in the process of healing. Since her recovery Sally has been able to do light riding and ring work. She is very forward on the ground and we are still working to improve her ground manners. Under saddle, she can be either very lazy or a bit forward; she will test her rider to see if they are going to be the leader or not, but once she knows you are the leader she will go anywhere you point her. Due to her previous hind leg injury and needing to wear corrective shoes up front, if being rode, we suggest Sally as a pasture pal or for light trail riding only. If not being ridden she can be barefoot and overall she is an easy keeper, trailers like a pro, and is great for the farrier and the vet. If you’re looking for a quiet easy going pasture pal or for a horse that will give you her heart and soul, then Sally may be the right horse for you.
